Money, Hours, and Teaching: Here's What You Need to Know

Hey everyone, I've compiled some of the most common questions I get asked as a VIPKid teacher. If you've been thinking about taking the plunge and jumping into online teaching, there are a few things you should know.

How much can I make?
The income potential with VIPKid is essentially unlimited. You can work as much or as little as you want. While getting bookings at first can take time, once you've taught a few classes and gotten a few 5-apple feedbacks, you'll see that your bookings quickly increase. It's important to set a financial goal for yourself and then open enough slots to meet those goals. Working a couple of hours each day can easily net you $2,000+ per month as long as you are consistent with your schedule and open enough slots. Some teachers make even more than that. I know one teacher who had a $5,000+ month, but I don't think she slept very much!

Aren't the hours terrible?
The hours are completely flexible. I'm in CST, and the hours are from 7:30pm until 9:00am. Teaching a few hours before my regular job works well for me; however, some teachers like to teach in the evenings and others teach exclusively on the weekends. You can plan your classes up to two weeks in advance or you can open short notice bookings if you prefer to have a more flexible schedule.

Is teaching online difficult?
Teaching online has a learning curve but can be incredibly rewarding. Whether you've taught at a brick and mortar school or you're new to teaching, you'll find that each class brings its own challenges. One of the coolest things about teaching online is that each student and class is different, so things don't get boring. There are many resources for improving as a teacher, including workshops offered by VIPKid and YouTube videos created by other teachers.

Reward Systems

Hey VIPKid teachers! Are you looking for some new reward systems? Here are some of my favorite reward systems to use with my students. Check these out if you're looking for some new and interesting ways to keep your students interested in the lessons. These are all non-crafty ideas, so if you aren't much of an artist or you don't consider yourself creative, you'll enjoy how simple these are.

Race Cars

One of my favorite reward systems is race cars. You can get a pack of multi-colored cars on Amazon or pick these up at any Wal-Mart, Target, Dollar Tree, etc. I give five cars during class. These also offer a way to extend the lesson if you need to fill some time. For example, you can talk about the color of the car, how many doors it has, etc.

Dolls

Grab a couple of little dolls and show them to your students. You can get a pack of these on Amazon for around $15 (Set of 10). Other places I've seen these are Dollar General and Target. Remember that you don't have to use all of these dolls as the reward. You can use a couple during class and talk about each doll. Use them to extend the lesson. What is she wearing? What color is her hair? Do you like this doll? You can use these over and over again in different classes and there is zero prep work required.

Stickers

I saved the best for last! STICKERS are my students' favorite reward! I use a 3x5 card and write the student's name on the card. Then they earn stickers during class, which I place on the card. This activity is fun and there are so many types of stickers available that you can mix and match what you use very easily. This doesn't require any prep, but if you have a student with a favorite movie or hobby, you can always choose stickers with that theme.

Here's what you need to know about VIPKid

Visit VIPKid now to apply!

If you're ready to make a difference in the world of a child, you might be wondering what your job options actually are. The truth is that you don't need a lot of experience or even a lot of time to be able to make a difference in the world. Teaching English online can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only will you get to teach kids around the globe, but you'll get to make money doing it! Here's what you need to know.

The Hours are Flexible
One thing that concerned me about VIPKid was that the hours might conflict with my other commitment; however, the great thing about this school is that you can work as much or as little as you want. VIPKid is open during daytime hours in China. If you're in America, like me, this means you can expect to be able to work between 7:30pm CST and 9:00am CST. I love this! I typically work each morning for a few hours and then I take a couple of nighttime shifts each week as a way to make extra money for my family while teaching children overseas.

The Children are Fun
VIPKid classes are fun! I wasn't prepared to laugh or play as much as I get to in my classes. The kids are excited and engaged. Of course, there can always be a class where a student might feel a little shy or nervous, but typically, kids are pretty interested in the lessons and are excited to learn.

The Curriculum is Planned
One of the best things about VIP Kid is that you don't have to stress about anything. The lessons are totally planned for you. You'll need to provide your own props and in some classes, you'll need a reward system, but this is pretty simple and easy. As far as the actual lesson, you don't need to worry about making quizzes or grading papers.

The Pay is Great
Your base pay will vary based on your work experience and how you interview, but VIPKid will offer a per-class payment. This can range from $7-$9 per class. You'll also get a dollar for each class successfully completed, a bonus for completing a certain number of classes, and $2 for short notice bookings. This means the dollars really add up, especially if you teach a lot of classes.
